Use and Occupancy Classification

Use and Occupancy Classification

Classifies buildings and spaces by occupancy group based on use and hazard — the basis for height, area, egress, and fire-resistance requirements.

302 — Occupancy Classification and Use Designation

Structures are classified into one or more of the occupancy groups by the use that most nearly resembles the actual occupancy. The 2018 edition retains the ten primary groups used in earlier editions, with refinements to several Group I and Group R provisions. See Section 303 for Assembly occupancies.
