Maryland building codes

Maryland sets statewide minimum construction standards through the Maryland Building Performance Standards (MBPS), codified at COMAR 09.12.51 and administered by the Department of Labor. The 2010 MBPS incorporated by reference the 2009 editions of the IBC, IRC, and IECC, effective January 1, 2010, until the 2012 editions took effect January 1, 2012. Local jurisdictions may amend the building provisions but not weaken the energy code. The model-code text below is the edition Maryland incorporated.

Where verbatim source text is shown, it is reproduced from the code as adopted into law by the jurisdiction, sourced from public.resource.org under the government edicts doctrine (see Georgia v. Public.Resource.Org, Inc., 590 U.S. 255 (2020)). This material reflects enacted law and is provided for reference and educational purposes only. It is not legal advice and may not reflect local amendments or the most recently adopted edition. Always verify requirements with the authority having jurisdiction.
