## Direct answer

IRC Chapter 10 covers masonry fireplaces (R1001), masonry chimneys (R1003) and factory-built units (R1004 and R1005). For a masonry fireplace, R1001.6 requires a firebox at least 20 inches deep, R1001.9 a hearth at least 4 inches thick with a hearth extension at least 2 inches thick, and R1001.10 a hearth extension reaching 16 inches in front of and 8 inches beyond each side of the opening, increased to 20 and 12 inches where the opening is 6 square feet or larger. R1001.11 keeps combustible framing 2 inches from the front and sides and 4 inches from the back of the fireplace. A masonry chimney must terminate at least 3 feet above the highest point where it passes through the roof and at least 2 feet higher than any portion of a building within 10 feet, with 2 inches of airspace to combustibles inside or within an exterior wall and 1 inch where it is entirely outside (R1003.18). Factory-built fireplaces are listed to UL 127 and installed per their listing.

## What does this term mean?

**Chimney and Fireplace Code Requirements: Hearth Extensions, Termination and Clearances (IRC R1001–R1006)**: IRC Chapter 10 sets prescriptive rules for masonry fireplaces and chimneys: a 20-inch-deep firebox, hearth extensions of 16 in front and 8 in each side (20 and 12 in for openings of 6 sq ft or more), chimneys 3 ft above the roof and 2 ft above anything within 10 ft, and 2-inch clearance to combustibles; factory-built units follow their UL 127 listing.

## What are the key takeaways?

- Firebox depth: 20 in minimum
- Hearth extension, opening under 6 sq ft: 16 in in front, 8 in each side
- Hearth extension, opening 6 sq ft or more: 20 in in front, 12 in each side
- Chimney termination: 3 ft above roof penetration and 2 ft above anything within 10 ft

## Which code sections govern chimneys and fireplaces?

For one- and two-family dwellings and townhouses, IRC Chapter 10 is the governing chapter, and most states adopt it through their residential code, sometimes renumbered or amended. Masonry construction is prescriptive; factory-built units rely on their listing.

| Section (IRC 2021) | Covers | How compliance is shown |
| --- | --- | --- |
| R1001 | Masonry fireplaces | Prescriptive dimensions in this section and Table R1001.1 |
| R1002 | Masonry heaters | ASTM E1602, or listing to UL 1482 or CEN 15250 |
| R1003 | Masonry chimneys | Prescriptive dimensions, flue sizing tables, termination and clearances |
| R1004 | Factory-built fireplaces | Listed and labeled, tested to UL 127 |
| R1005 | Factory-built chimneys | Listed and labeled; UL 103 Type HT for solid fuel; UL 127 for factory-built fireplaces |
| R1006 | Exterior air supply | Combustion air duct and outlet rules |

Commercial buildings use IBC Chapter 21 for masonry fireplaces and chimneys and the International Mechanical Code for factory-built systems; the dimensions are largely parallel but should be checked in those chapters.

## Masonry fireplace dimensions

| Element | Requirement | IRC 2021 section |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Footing | Concrete or solid masonry at least 12 in thick, extending 6 in beyond the fireplace on all sides, below frost depth | R1001.2 |
| Firebox walls | 8 in of solid masonry including a firebrick lining at least 2 in thick, or 10 in unlined; firebrick joints 1/4 in maximum | R1001.5 |
| Firebox depth | At least 20 in | R1001.6 |
| Rumford fireplace | Depth at least 12 in and one-third of the opening width; throat at least 12 in above the lintel | R1001.6, Exception |
| Throat | At least 8 in above the opening and at least 4 in deep | R1001.6 |
| Lintel | Noncombustible, bearing at least 4 in at each end | R1001.7 |
| Damper | Ferrous metal, at least 8 in above the top of the opening, operable from the room | R1001.7.1 |
| Smoke chamber walls | 8 in of solid masonry, or 6 in including a firebrick or vitrified clay lining | R1001.8 |
| Hearth | Concrete or masonry at least 4 in thick, on noncombustible supports | R1001.9, R1001.9.1 |
| Hearth extension thickness | At least 2 in; 3/8 in permitted where the firebox floor is at least 8 in above the extension | R1001.9.2 |
| Hearth extension size | 16 in front and 8 in each side; 20 in and 12 in where the opening is 6 sq ft or larger | R1001.10 |

The 6 square foot threshold is the area of the fireplace opening (width times height). A 36-inch by 24-inch opening is exactly 6 square feet and takes the larger extension.

## Clearances to combustibles

The IRC sets different airspaces for the fireplace and for the chimney, and neither may be packed with insulation.

| Element | Minimum clearance | IRC 2021 section |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Masonry fireplace, front faces and sides | 2 in to wood beams, joists, studs and other combustibles | R1001.11 |
| Masonry fireplace, back faces | 4 in | R1001.11 |
| Masonry chimney inside the building or within an exterior wall | 2 in airspace | R1003.18 |
| Masonry chimney entirely outside the exterior walls | 1 in airspace, including through a soffit or cornice | R1003.18 |
| Exposed combustible mantel or trim | Not within 6 in of the opening; within 12 in, projection no more than 1/8 in per inch of distance | R1001.11, Exception 4 |
| Trim and sheathing edges abutting fireplace sidewalls | At least 12 in from the inside of the firebox lining | R1001.11, Exception 3 |
| Trim and sheathing edges abutting chimney sidewalls | At least 8 in from the inside of the flue lining | R1003.18, Exception 3 |

Where the chimney or fireplace passes floors and ceilings, the gap is fireblocked with noncombustible material on metal strips or lath (R1001.12, R1003.19). Masonry fireplaces listed to UL 127, and chimneys with lining systems listed to UL 1777, for use in contact with combustibles may have combustibles against them per their listing (R1001.11 and R1003.18, Exception 1).

## Chimney termination: the 3-2-10 rule

IRC R1003.9 has two tests and both must pass:

1. The chimney must extend at least **3 feet above the highest point where it passes through the roof**.
2. It must be at least **2 feet higher than any portion of a building within 10 feet**.

On a pitched roof the second test usually governs, because the ridge and the roof surface upslope of the chimney are portions of the building within 10 feet. A chimney close to the ridge can be short; one well down the slope must rise until it is 2 feet above the roof surface 10 feet upslope. Masonry chimneys also need a sloped concrete, metal or stone cap with a drip edge (R1003.9.1). Spark arrestors and rain caps must keep a net free area at least four times the flue outlet area, and spark arrestor screens must stop spheres larger than 1/2 inch while passing spheres smaller than 3/8 inch (R1003.9.2, R1003.9.3).

## Chimney walls, liners and flue size

- **Walls:** solid masonry or grouted hollow units at least 4 inches nominal (R1003.10).
- **Liners:** every masonry chimney is lined, with clay liners to ASTM C315, UL 1777 listed systems, listed factory-built chimney units or other approved materials (R1003.11.1). Clay liners start 8 inches below the lowest inlet, or at the top of the smoke chamber for a fireplace, and may not slope more than 30 degrees from vertical (R1003.12).
- **Multiple flues:** separated by masonry wythes at least 4 inches thick (R1003.13).
- **Fireplace flue area, Option 1 (R1003.15.1):** round flues at least 1/12 of the fireplace opening area; square flues and rectangular flues with an aspect ratio under 2:1 at least 1/10; rectangular flues of 2:1 or more at least 1/8.
- **Cleanouts:** within 6 inches of the base of each flue, unless the flue can be cleaned through the fireplace opening (R1003.17).
- **Crickets:** required where the chimney is wider than 30 inches parallel to the ridge and does not intersect it (R1003.20).
- **Seismic:** in Seismic Design Categories D0, D1 and D2, chimneys up to 40 inches wide get four No. 4 vertical bars and are anchored at each floor, ceiling or roof line more than 6 feet above grade unless built entirely within the exterior walls (R1003.3, R1003.4).

## Factory-built fireplaces and chimneys

Prefabricated, zero-clearance and insert-style fireplaces are factory-built units. IRC R1004 requires them to be listed and labeled, tested to **UL 127** and installed in accordance with the listing; the masonry dimensions above do not apply. The hearth extension follows the listing and must be readily distinguishable from the surrounding floor; listed hearth extensions comply with UL 1618 (R1004.2). Decorative shrouds at the termination, unvented gas logs and gasketed doors are prohibited unless the specific system is listed for them (R1004.3 to R1004.5).

Factory-built chimneys are installed and terminated per the manufacturer's instructions (R1005.1). Those serving solid-fuel appliances in dwellings must meet UL 103 Type HT; those serving factory-built fireplaces must meet UL 127. Offsets may not exceed 30 degrees from vertical or four elbows, and a No. 26 gage steel insulation shield must rise at least 2 inches above attic insulation (R1005.7, R1005.8).

## Exterior combustion air

R1006 requires masonry and factory-built fireplaces to have an exterior air supply unless the room is mechanically ventilated to neutral or positive pressure. The intake may not be in a garage or basement and is screened with 1/4-inch mesh; the passageway is 6 to 55 square inches; and the outlet is in the back or side of the firebox, or at hearth level within 24 inches of the opening. Unlisted ducts keep 1 inch from combustibles within 5 feet of the outlet. These are typical 2021 IRC model-code values; verify them against the edition and amendments adopted by the authority having jurisdiction and the appliance listing.

## Worked masonry fireplace and chimney check

A masonry fireplace with a 36-inch-wide by 30-inch-high opening, in a two-story house, checked against the 2021 IRC.

| Step | Rule | Calculation | Result |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 1 | Opening area | 36 in × 30 in = 1,080 sq in | 7.5 sq ft, which is 6 sq ft or larger |
| 2 | Hearth extension depth, R1001.10 | Larger-opening value | 20 in in front of the opening |
| 3 | Hearth extension width, R1001.10 | 36 in + (2 × 12 in) | 60 in wide overall |
| 4 | Hearth extension thickness, R1001.9.2 | Firebox floor flush with the extension | 2 in minimum |
| 5 | Firebox depth, R1001.6 | Standard (not Rumford) | 20 in minimum |
| 6 | Damper height, R1001.7.1 | Above the top of the opening | 8 in minimum |
| 7 | Round flue, Option 1 (1/12 of opening) | 1,080 ÷ 12 | 90 sq in needed; a 10¾-in round liner at 90 sq in just meets it, a 12-in round at 113 sq in gives margin |
| 8 | Square flue (1/10 of opening) | 1,080 ÷ 10 | 108 sq in needed; 12 × 12 nominal (102 sq in) fails, 13 × 13 (127 sq in) passes |
| 9 | Rectangular flue under 2:1 (1/10) | 108 sq in needed | 12 × 16 nominal (131 sq in) passes |
| 10 | Rectangular flue 2:1 or more (1/8) | 1,080 ÷ 8 | 135 sq in needed; 8.5 × 18 nominal (101 sq in) fails |
| 11 | Mantel 8 in above the opening, R1001.11 Exception 4 | 8 in × 1/8 in per in | Projection of 1 in maximum; a deeper shelf must sit 12 in or more above the opening |

Liner areas are the net cross-sectional areas listed in IRC Tables R1003.14(1) and R1003.14(2).

## Worked chimney termination heights on an 8:12 roof

Heights are measured from the highest point where the chimney passes through the roof (its upslope side), with the 10 feet read horizontally from the chimney. Confirm the measurement convention with the authority having jurisdiction.

| Case | Highest portion of the building within 10 ft | Height of that portion above the penetration | 3 ft test | 2 ft test | Required chimney height above the penetration |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| A: ridge 3 ft upslope | Ridge | 3 × 8/12 = 2.0 ft | 3.0 ft | 2.0 + 2 = 4.0 ft | 4.0 ft |
| B: ridge 6 ft upslope | Ridge | 6 × 8/12 = 4.0 ft | 3.0 ft | 4.0 + 2 = 6.0 ft | 6.0 ft |
| C: ridge 14 ft upslope | Roof surface 10 ft upslope | 10 × 8/12 = 6.67 ft | 3.0 ft | 6.67 + 2 = 8.67 ft | 8.67 ft |
| D: chimney through the ridge | Nothing higher within 10 ft | 0 ft | 3.0 ft | 0 + 2 = 2.0 ft | 3.0 ft |

Case C shows why chimneys low on a steep roof grow tall: once the ridge is more than 10 feet away, the roof surface at the 10-foot mark governs. A dormer, adjacent wing or neighbouring part of the same building within 10 feet is checked the same way. Values are typical model-code values; verify against the edition adopted by the authority having jurisdiction.

## Frequently asked questions

### How far does a hearth extension have to extend in front of a fireplace?

Under IRC R1001.10, a masonry fireplace hearth extension must reach at least 16 inches in front of the opening and 8 inches beyond each side. Where the fireplace opening is 6 square feet or larger, it must reach 20 inches in front and 12 inches beyond each side. The extension must be at least 2 inches thick, or 3/8 inch where the firebox floor is raised 8 inches or more above it.

### How high does a chimney have to be above the roof?

IRC R1003.9 requires a chimney to extend at least 3 feet above the highest point where it passes through the roof and at least 2 feet higher than any portion of a building within 10 feet. On a sloped roof the second test usually governs, because the roof surface upslope of the chimney is itself a portion of the building within 10 feet.

### What clearance does a masonry chimney need to combustible framing?

IRC R1003.18 requires a 2-inch airspace between combustibles and any part of a masonry chimney inside the building or within an exterior wall, and 1 inch for a chimney entirely outside the exterior walls, including where it passes through a soffit or cornice. The space may not be filled except with noncombustible fireblocking at floors and ceilings (R1003.19).

### How close can a wood mantel be to a fireplace opening?

IRC R1001.11, Exception 4 allows an exposed combustible mantel or trim directly on the masonry fireplace front, but nothing combustible within 6 inches of the opening. Within 12 inches of the opening, combustible material may project no more than 1/8 inch for each inch of distance from the opening, so a mantel 8 inches above the opening may project at most 1 inch.

### What code applies to a prefabricated or zero-clearance fireplace?

Factory-built fireplaces must be listed and labeled, tested to UL 127 and installed exactly as the listing describes (IRC R1004.1). The hearth extension, clearances, chimney and termination all come from the manufacturer's installation instructions rather than the masonry rules, and chimneys serving them must comply with UL 127 (R1005.4). Listed hearth extensions comply with UL 1618.

### When does a chimney need a cricket?

IRC R1003.20 requires a cricket where the chimney dimension parallel to the ridge is greater than 30 inches and the chimney does not intersect the ridge. Table R1003.20 sets the cricket height as a fraction of chimney width W: one-half of W at 12:12, one-third at 8:12, one-quarter at 6:12, one-sixth at 4:12 and one-eighth at 3:12.
