## Direct answer and reference scope

Virginia is presented here as a reference within the the listed code collection collection for Virginia. Use the [Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development](https://www.dhcd.virginia.gov/virginia-uniform-statewide-building-code-usbc) to confirm the code edition currently adopted for the project, and compare the model text with state amendments, local amendments, effective dates and the permit authority's interpretation. The [ICC code library](https://codes.iccsafe.org/codes) is the model-code publication path. This Harth page is a searchable reference transcription, not an official code publication, legal opinion or confirmation that this edition controls a particular address. Record the project jurisdiction, application date, occupancy, construction type and amendment set before relying on a section. Where this page conflicts with an official publication or the authority having jurisdiction, the official source controls.

Virginia regulates construction statewide through the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code (USBC), codified at 13VAC5-63 and administered by the Department of Housing and Community Development. The USBC incorporates editions of the International Codes by reference with Virginia amendments; the 2009-cycle USBC took effect March 1, 2011. The model-code text below is the edition Virginia incorporated, before state amendments.
