Australian NCC Climate Zones & Building Design Data
Australia's eight NCC climate zones select climate-responsive code provisions, but they do not replace NatHERS weather files, Bureau of Meteorology station records or purpose-specific engineering design conditions.

Direct answer
Use the ABCB address or coordinate map to establish the NCC climate zone, then separately record the applicable state or territory edition, any NatHERS climate file, the representative BOM station and each engineering design condition. These sources are related, but their values are not interchangeable.
Four systems, four different jobs
A reliable climate brief starts by asking what decision the data must support. The ABCB Climate Map assigns one of eight NCC zones for climate-responsive code provisions. A NatHERS climate file supplies hourly weather data for an accredited home energy-rating workflow. A named Bureau of Meteorology climate station supplies public observations and statistics. Engineering design conditions support a defined calculation such as a peak heating or cooling load and must be drawn from the source and edition required for that calculation.

How the NCC map should be used
The ABCB says the climate map combines locations with similar climates because heating and cooling needs vary across Australia. Its current interactive map accepts an address, postcode or coordinates. The ABCB also warns that LGA boundaries are only a locating aid: changes to those boundaries do not change the climate zones, so old LGA-based references should not be treated as the lookup method.
The eight official shorthand descriptions are Zone 1 high-humidity summer/warm winter; Zone 2 warm-humid summer/mild winter; Zone 3 hot-dry summer/warm winter; Zone 4 hot-dry summer/cool winter; Zone 5 warm temperate; Zone 6 mild temperate; Zone 7 cool temperate; and Zone 8 alpine. Those descriptions are a useful orientation, not a substitute for the address result or the provisions in the applicable edition.
Edition and jurisdiction come before the table
The ABCB's general NCC guidance and Part A3 explain that State and Territory legislation gives the NCC legal effect and may add, vary or delete provisions. As at this review, adoption of NCC 2025 is not uniform. Therefore a note that says only "NCC climate zone 6" is incomplete: add the governing edition, amendment, building classification, compliance pathway and jurisdictional variations.
What the BOM tables do and do not say
BOM's climate-statistics method says each station table reports available observations and that the record length can differ by element. A station may have a long rainfall history but a shorter temperature or humidity history. BOM also explains that a mean does not show how widely observations are scattered, and that statistics over standard 30-year periods are climate normals whereas the location tables can cover all available years.
That makes a BOM table valuable for an auditable climate profile, provided the station number, coordinates, elevation and element-specific period travel with the values. It does not make the annual mean maximum, hottest monthly mean or recorded extreme a building-services design temperature.
Station selection is a design decision
The closest station is not automatically the most representative. Compare coastal exposure, elevation, urban heat, terrain, observation period and whether the station is open. For a site near a zone boundary or with strong local topography, record why one station or climate file was selected and ask the responsible consultant to confirm it. The city pages in this series deliberately show one public reference station, not a universal city design station.
Keep hazard data on its own track
An NCC climate zone should not stand in for wind region, rainfall intensity, flood level, bushfire attack level, corrosion exposure or alpine loading. Each has a separate legal or technical source and may vary materially within one climate zone. Treat those as independent project inputs with their own editions and site evidence.

Release check: the design team should be able to trace every numeric climate input to a named source, location, period or percentile, units, governing edition and reviewer. Leave the value blank when that chain is incomplete.

What are Australia's NCC climate zones?
The ABCB groups locations into eight zones so the NCC's energy-efficiency Deemed-to-Satisfy provisions can respond to broadly similar climates. The official descriptions run from Zone 1, high-humidity summer and warm winter, through warm, dry and temperate zones to Zone 8 alpine. The zone is a code classification, not a weather forecast or a complete design dataset.
Is an NCC climate zone the same as a NatHERS climate zone?
No. The NCC uses eight broad zones for code provisions, while NatHERS uses more granular climate files for thermal simulation. Can BOM monthly climate averages be used as HVAC design temperatures?

HVAC design conditions are purpose-specific values, commonly tied to an exact station, variable, percentile and source edition. Obtain the condition required by the project specification and governing standard; do not substitute a monthly mean, a mean maximum or a record extreme.

It depends on the State or Territory, application timing and transition provisions. The ABCB states that the NCC is given legal effect by jurisdictional legislation and that adoption dates and variations can differ. Confirm the edition and amendments with the relevant building administration and approval authority for the specific project.
