What a screw and fastener calculator does

A screw and fastener calculator estimates how many deck screws, drywall screws or sheathing nails a job needs, and how many boxes to buy. Choose the application, enter the area and the framing spacing, and set the fastener spacing or the fasteners per board–joist crossing. The calculator returns the fasteners per sheet or per crossing, the total with waste and the number of boxes.

Fasteners are counted where boards and sheets meet framing. A deck board is usually fixed with two screws at every joist it crosses, so a 16 × 12 ft deck with 5½ in boards and joists at 16 in has 26 rows × 13 joists × 2 = 676 screws. A 4 × 8 sheet laid across studs at 16 in sits on seven support lines; at the common 6 in edge and 12 in field schedule it takes 43 fasteners.

Default spacings are typical published schedules and can be edited to match the product instructions or the engineer's schedule. The tool does not select fastener type, length or coating, and shear walls, diaphragms and fire-rated assemblies have their own requirements.

How to use the screw & fastener quantity calculator

  1. Choose Imperial or Metric, then the Application: Deck boards, Sheathing / subfloor or Drywall / plasterboard.
  2. Enter the Area length and Area width. For decks, the length is the direction the boards run.
  3. Enter the Joist / stud spacing. For decks, set the Board face width, Board gap and Fasteners per board–joist crossing (two for face screws, one for most hidden clips).
  4. For sheets, choose the Sheet size (or Custom) and the spacing: Spacing at sheet ends and Spacing at intermediate supports for sheathing, or Screw spacing along framing for drywall.
  5. Set the Fasteners per box, a Waste allowance and an optional price per box. Read the fasteners per sheet or crossing, the total with waste and the boxes, then download the PDF, CSV or diagram.

Worked example

Imperial: A 16 × 12 ft deck with 5.5 in boards, ¼ in gaps and joists at 16 in has 26 rows and 13 joists: 676 screws at two per crossing, or 744 with 10% waste, which is 2 boxes of 500.

Metric: A 6 × 4 m deck with 140 mm boards, 5 mm gaps and joists at 400 mm has 28 rows and 16 joists: 896 screws at two per crossing, or 986 with 10% waste, which is 2 boxes of 500.

How many deck screws per square foot?

With face screws, the count is rows of boards × joists × screws per crossing. Spread over the deck, that is 2 × (12 ÷ (board width + gap)) × (12 ÷ joist spacing) screws per square foot in inches. For 5½ in boards with ¼ in gaps on joists at 16 in, that is about 3.1 screws per square foot, or 313 per 100 ft², before the extra joist at the end of the deck and waste.

The calculator counts whole rows and whole joists for the actual deck, so small decks come out a little higher than the per-square-foot rate. A 10 × 10 ft deck at 16 in has 21 rows and 8 joists: 336 screws.

Sheathing and subfloor nailing schedules

Wood structural panels such as plywood and OSB are commonly fastened at 6 in along supported panel edges and 12 in along intermediate supports, the schedule in IRC Table R602.3(1) and APA installation guides. Laid with its 8 ft side across framing at 16 in, a 4 × 8 sheet sits on seven supports: the two end lines take 48 ÷ 6 + 1 = 9 fasteners each and the five intermediate lines 48 ÷ 12 + 1 = 5 each, 43 in total.

Shear walls, roof diaphragms and high-wind areas often use closer edge spacing and blocked edges, which add fasteners along the long panel edges. Enter the engineer's spacing where there is one.

How many drywall screws per sheet?

Drywall screws are spaced along every framing member the board crosses. For single-ply gypsum board on framing at 16 in, GA-216 and ASTM C840 commonly cite screws at a maximum of 12 in on ceilings and 16 in on walls; at 24 in framing, 12 in on both. A 4 × 8 sheet across studs at 16 in has seven framing lines, so at 12 in spacing it takes 7 × 5 = 35 screws and at 16 in 7 × 4 = 28.

Estimating guides often round this to about 32 screws per 4 × 8 sheet, or 1,000 per 1,000 ft² of board, which sits between the two spacings.

Worked example: walls and subfloor for one room

The walls of a 12 × 16 ft room with 8 ft ceilings have 56 × 8 = 448 ft² of surface. In 4 × 8 sheets on studs at 16 in with screws at 12 in, that is 14 sheets × 35 = 490 screws, or 539 with 10% waste: two boxes of 500.

A 24 × 16 ft subfloor in 4 × 8 sheets on joists at 16 in with a 6 / 12 in schedule is 12 sheets × 43 = 516 fasteners, or 568 with 10% waste. Both counts treat cut pieces like whole sheets, which is close for rooms laid out in full sheets.

Who it is for and when to use it

Buying deck screws

Count face screws or hidden clips for a new deck, then size the boards with the decking board calculator.

Ordering drywall screws

Turn a sheet count from the drywall sheet calculator into screws and boxes at the spacing your ceilings and walls need.

Sheathing and subfloor nails

Estimate nails or screws for wall sheathing, roof sheathing or subfloor at the standard or the engineer's schedule.

Method, formulas & assumptions

Deck boards: rows = (width + gap) ÷ (board width + gap), rounded up; joists = length ÷ spacing, rounded down, + 1; fasteners = rows × joists × fasteners per crossing. Sheets: sheets = area ÷ sheet area, rounded up; support lines = sheet length ÷ framing spacing + 1; fasteners per line = sheet width ÷ fastener spacing + 1, with the end spacing on the two outer lines and the intermediate spacing on the rest. Total × (1 + waste), then boxes = total ÷ box size, rounded up.

Imperial inputs are converted with exact factors (1 ft = 0.3048 m, 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg, 1 US gal = 3.785411784 L) before the calculation runs in SI, then results are converted back.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using area-based rules of thumb on a small deck. Whole rows and the extra end joist add screws that a per-square-foot rate misses.
  • Using one spacing for walls and ceilings. Ceilings usually need closer drywall screws than walls.
  • Using the standard sheathing schedule for shear walls or diaphragms, which have closer, engineered edge nailing and blocked edges.
  • Forgetting that hidden clip systems use one clip per crossing plus starter and end clips, not two face screws.
  • Buying uncoated screws for treated lumber or coastal sites. Fastener type, length and corrosion resistance must suit the material and exposure.

Scope & limits

Default spacings are typical published schedules (IRC Table R602.3(1) and APA for wood structural panels, GA-216 / ASTM C840 for gypsum board) and are editable. Shear walls, diaphragms, high-wind zones and fire-rated assemblies have their own schedules. It does not choose fastener type, length or coating.

Frequently asked questions

How many deck screws do I need for a 12x12 deck?

With 5½ in boards, ¼ in gaps and joists at 16 in, a 12 × 12 ft deck has 26 rows and 10 joists: 520 screws at two per crossing, or 572 with 10% waste.

How many screws per sheet of drywall?

A 4 × 8 sheet on framing at 16 in takes 35 screws at 12 in spacing or 28 at 16 in spacing. A common estimating figure is about 32 per sheet.

What is the nailing schedule for plywood or OSB sheathing?

The common schedule is 6 in on centre at supported panel edges and 12 in at intermediate supports. Shear walls, diaphragms and high-wind areas often need closer spacing set by the engineer.

How many nails per 4x8 sheet of sheathing?

At 6 in edges and 12 in field on framing at 16 in, a 4 × 8 sheet laid across the framing takes 43 fasteners; on framing at 24 in it takes 33.

How many screws per board on a deck?

Usually two at every joist the board crosses. A 16 ft board on joists at 16 in crosses 13 joists and takes 26 screws.

Does it count hidden deck fasteners?

Set fasteners per crossing to 1 for most hidden clip systems. Starter and end clips and the manufacturer's spacing still apply.

Does the calculator work in metric?

Yes. Switch to Metric for metres and millimetres. A 6 × 4 m deck with 140 mm boards and joists at 400 mm takes 896 screws at two per crossing.

Do I need an account to download the result?

No. All calculations, local file processing and exports on this page are free, without an account.

Where are my inputs stored?

The tool keeps inputs in this browser tab. It does not upload them or create a cloud copy. Save or download anything you want to keep before leaving the page. Standard site analytics may operate independently of the tool.

Can I work in metric instead of imperial?

Yes. Use the Imperial / Metric switch above the inputs. Imperial (feet, inches, pounds, gallons) is the default; switching converts every dimensional field and result, and your choice is remembered across the free tools in this browser.
