How the code actually writes about canopy, quoted from the 2009 text hosted here:
Canopies shall be constructed in accordance with the motor fuel-dispensing facility canopy requirements of Section 406 of the International Building Code.
Outlet boxes shall be effectively closed with a cover, faceplate or fixture canopy.
In a completed installation, each outlet box shall be provided with a cover except where covered by means of a luminaire canopy, lampholder or device with a faceplate.
